Nick’s Misericords

Misericords are little ledges, or “mercy-seats” found beneath the seating built for the clergy of medieval cathedrals and churches. Many are decorated with strange and fantastical carvings, but they are usually hidden from view, and as most are carved in oak, they can be hard to see.
Nick has developed a style of illustrating misericords which enables us to see them much more clearly. Nick’s work brings to life the fantastical scenes imagined by craftsmen and committed to oak almost eight hundred years ago.
This film follows Nick as he visits the oldest known collection of misericords, in Exeter Cathedral.
